Why Is Dog Insurance Worth It?

Dog insurance can be worth it because surprises are part of life with a pup. From sudden injuries to ongoing illnesses, vet care can get expensive fast — one emergency trip could cost up to $1,750 or more.3

MetLife Pet Insurance helps you manage costs for new injuries and illnesses with reimbursements up to 90% on eligible expenses.2 It’s a way to say yes to better vet care — and help protect your budget — through every stage of your dog’s life.

How Does Dog Insurance Work?

Vet visits can be stressful enough — pet insurance shouldn’t be. MetLife Pet makes it easy to submit claims and get reimbursed.2 Here’s a quick look at how our pet insurance works.

FAQs About Dog Pet Insurance

MetLife Pet’s dog insurance starts at $16 per month for one dog, but your exact price depends on a few factors.1 Your pet’s age, species, breed, and your zip code all impact the cost. Choosing a different reimbursement rate, deductible, or annual limit can also change the price2,12,13 — as well as adding more pets to a policy or Preventive Care coverage.

Our flexible coverage makes it easy to find what works for your dog at every stage of life. Visit our plans page for more information on our available insurance options.

MetLife Pet dog insurance plans typically don’t provide coverage for things like pre-existing conditions, elective or cosmetic procedures, grooming, obedience training, or breeding.

Pre-existing conditions include anything that your dog displayed symptoms of, was diagnosed with, or was treated for before enrollment or during any applicable waiting periods. MetLife Pet has a 0-day waiting period on accidents and Preventive Care benefits, and a 14-day waiting period on illnesses.

MetLife Pet’s dog insurance can be used at any licensed vet, specialist, or emergency animal hospital in the United States! You don’t have to worry about “in-network” and “out-of-network” providers or pet health insurance cards.

The easiest way to file a claim is through our mobile app or desktop portal. Simply log in, start a new claim, upload the itemized invoice and SOAP notes (your pet’s medical record) from the vet visit, and submit! From there, you can track the status of your claim and view the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) when it’s processed.

You have 90 days from the vet invoice date to submit a claim for reimbursement. Once it’s processed, reimbursable expenses will be sent to you via direct payments or paper checks.

Get coverage for all of your furry companions with pet insurance for multiple pets. Add up to three pets (dogs and cats allowed) on a single policy with a shared deductible to save even more money.9

We also offer cat insurance for your frisky feline friends and may be able to cover certain exotic pets — like rabbits, birds, ferrets, and reptiles.14

Choosing the best pet insurance starts with a few key considerations.

First, examine your budget — including the monthly premium you’re comfortable with and how much reimbursement you’d want for eligible expenses.2 Next, think about your dog’s current and future health needs to decide whether accident-only or accident and illness coverage makes the most sense, in addition to optional wellness coverage you might want. Finally, review which expenses matter most to you, such as exam fees, alternative therapies, or coverage for senior dogs.

Getting pet insurance for your dog is a great idea at any time! Usually, the sooner you can enroll your dog in an insurance policy, the better your chances are they’ll be covered for new health conditions and vet bills.

You may find that a good time to get dog insurance is before pre-existing conditions arise, when it helps protect your finances and is within your budget, or while your pet is young.

Yes, senior dogs can benefit from pet insurance — and MetLife Pet won’t deny their enrollment because of their age. While some of your older dog’s health issues might fall under a pre-existing condition exclusion, you could still get money back if new accidents or illnesses pop up. This might make it easier to manage unexpected vet bills if you’re already paying for chronic condition costs.

A dog insurance policy can provide financial protection, so you can focus on getting the best care for your pup while reducing the emotional pressure of paying for it.

We’re a company made up of pet parents, and 90% of our claims adjusters have worked as vet techs. We’ve donated to, fundraised for, and hosted events with over 500 shelters across the U.S. — big and small. For us, pets are as important as any member of the family.

Our dedication to putting pets and people first could be one of the reasons MetLife Pet Insurance was given the “Pet Insurance of the Year Award” in 2025, and has received this award every year since 2022.15 See what policyholders are saying about their experiences with MetLife Pet on Trustpilot.
