Through MetLife Pet’s optional Preventive Care plan add-on, you can get money back on many of your pet’s routine care expenses, up to your plan’s annual benefit limits. This wellness coverage must be added to your standard insurance policy — we currently don’t offer it as a stand-alone plan.

Some of the routine care expenses you could get reimbursements on through the Preventive Care plan add-on include:

Some covered expenses are combined under a shared annual benefit limit. See our Preventive Care plan page for more details about these limits.

How Does MetLife Pet’s Preventive Care Plan Add-on Work?

Through MetLife Pet’s optional Preventive Care, you can typically get reimbursed for covered routine expenses up to a specific dollar amount. When you reach the benefit limit shown in your plan, you’re responsible for all related routine vet care expenses until your plan renews.

After your plan’s waiting period ends, you’re eligible for reimbursements on covered expenses. Our Preventive Care add-on benefits have a 0-day waiting period, so you could bring your pet to the vet for a wellness exam, routine teeth cleaning, or vaccinations the day after you enroll and be eligible to submit a claim.1

To get reimbursed, submit your routine care or wellness claim just like you would a regular insurance claim. Visit the vet, pay your bill, and submit the claim with relevant vet records and the invoice. Most claims are processed within 5 days, and you can get your reimbursement through a direct payment or paper check.2

Preventive Care plan vs. pet insurance

MetLife Pet’s preventive care is optional coverage that can reimburse you for routine vet expenses up to your annual benefit limit. This plan helps you with expenses you can typically expect to pay when caring for your pet. It won’t cover expenses related to injuries or illnesses.

Our standard accident and illness insurance policy can reimburse you for covered vet care when your pet is hurt or sick. This plan helps you with unexpected expenses, but not routine or preventative care. You can customize your MetLife Pet policy coverage levels — with reimbursement options up to 90% — so it fits your pet’s needs and your budget.3

Why Is It Important To Have Pet Routine Care Coverage?

Having pet insurance that covers preventive care can help you reduce expected annual vet costs and potentially avoid pricey vet bills down the road. By lessening financial barriers to your pet’s routine care, it could make it easier to keep pets up-to-date on their annual exams. In doing so, vets may be able to spot early warning signs of health issues before they get more serious or expensive. Being able to start treatment early could also mean a better prognosis for your pet’s condition.4,5

Generally, you may need to bring in your puppies and kittens for multiple routine vet visits in their first year. For adult dogs and cats, you typically need to bring them in for just one routine exam per year and senior cats and dogs twice a year. The vet bill for just one routine visit could include costs for the exam, multiple vaccinations, a fecal test, blood work, a heartworm test, and a urinalysis.4,5 You might be looking at a bill that costs a few hundred dollars or more.6 Older pets may also need additional tests, like X-rays, during their visit to check the health of their organs and bones.4,5

Getting money back on some of these routine costs could help you keep more money in your wallet for unexpected vet costs. Plus, getting up to 90% back on covered expenses if your pet needs an unexpected trip to the vet might make having a MetLife Pet Insurance policy worth it.3
