Tips for Choosing Budget-Friendly Coverage Levels
Let’s dig into the three key factors that impact a plan’s cost and how you may want to adjust them to fit your budget.
Annual benefit limit1
The maximum dollar amount you can be reimbursed per policy year. Select a lower limit for a typically lower monthly premium. Keep in mind you’ll need another way to manage vet expenses after you’ve hit your annual limit.
Reimbursement rate1
The percentage of your vet bill reimbursed by MetLife Pet. Choose a higher rate if you want more cash back on covered claims, but note your premium may increase. Decide if more cash back (higher rate) or a lower monthly premium (lower rate) is right for your budget.
Deductible1
The amount of money you must pay before MetLife Pet will reimburse a covered claim.1 A high deductible typically means a lower monthly premium, but you’ll pay more out of pocket upfront. Low deductibles usually raise your premium, but you could start getting cash back sooner.
Tips for Choosing Coverage Levels That Fit Your Pet's Needs
Think about your pet's age.
Senior and young pets may be more at risk for illnesses and accidents. Consider a higher reimbursement rate to help you cover larger expenses. Adding Preventive Care for extra routine puppy and kitten vet appointments can also be helpful.
Keep their breed in mind.
Certain breeds can be more prone to certain conditions. Do some research to get a general idea of the health issues each breed may encounter, then consider adjusting your annual benefit limit to accommodate a possible future diagnosis.
Consider their lifestyle.
Higher annual benefit limits or reimbursement rates may be favorable for social, active dogs and outdoor cats. Indoor cats and less-active dogs still benefit from pet insurance, but they might be fine with basic protection.
MetLife Pet Plan FAQ's
MetLife Pet Insurance plans include coverage for pet expenses related to new accidents and illnesses. Some of these expenses include vet visit exam fees, surgeries, hospitalization and emergencies, prescribed medication and food, holistic and alternative therapies, diagnostic tests, and treatments.
Your pet’s exact coverage can vary based on whether you added Preventive Care, whether your pet has any pre-existing conditions, and any specific exclusions outlined in the policy. For more information, check out our coverage and exclusions page.
Pre-existing conditions, obedience training, non-prescription food, elective or cosmetic procedures, grooming, and breeding are typically not covered by MetLife Pet plans. This also includes injuries or illnesses related to negligence, racing, coursing, commercial guarding, law enforcement, and organized fighting.
Routine and wellness expenses are also excluded from standard insurance coverage and can only be reimbursed through our Preventive Care add-on. Download a sample policy for more details.
Your pet’s age and breed can impact the cost of your pet insurance plan, but they aren’t barriers to enrollment. You can enroll your dog or cat in a MetLife Pet plan regardless of their age or breed.5
Pet age and breed could indirectly affect your pet’s coverage if they already have health issues that would be ineligible for reimbursement.1
The cost of our pet insurance can vary based on a few factors, such as your pet’s species, breed, gender, and age, as well as your zip code and the level of coverage you choose. Customizing your reimbursement rate, deductible, and annual limit can all affect your monthly premium.1
With MetLife Pet, coverage starts at $7 per month for one cat and $16 per month for one dog.2 If you decide to enroll your pets in a Family Plan, this can also impact how much your pet insurance policy costs.3
