Choosing a Vet

If you’re like us, you consider your pets to be part of the family. That means that finding a good veterinarian for your best friend is just as important as finding a trustworthy family doctor. The best time to look for a good vet is when you don’t desperately need one, so we recommend planning ahead to find the best doctor for your pet.

The best way to find a terrific veterinarian is the same way you likely found your family doctor: on the recommendation of a trusted friend. Even animal shelters, groomers, and trainers can recommend a reputable and respected vet in your area.

Once you’ve narrowed your search to 3-5 potential veterinarians, schedule an informative visit to meet the staff and doctor(s) and tour the facility. A good veterinary practice should be enthusiastic about giving you a look around (except for areas where procedures are currently being performed). During your visit, make note of the following:

  • Is the facility clean, well-staffed, and calm/organized?
  • How many veterinarians work in the practice?
  • Are the staff friendly and knowledgeable? Ask questions about what they’re doing. How do they interact with observable animals in the facility?
  • Are dogs and cats housed in separate areas if boarding or pre- and post-operative housing is provided?
  • Can x-rays, ultrasounds, blood work, and other diagnostic services be done in-house, or referred to a specialist?
  • Are any emergency services available?
  • Ask the vet about his or her treatment philosophies.
  • Ask if the practice offers any incentives or discounts for patients with pet insurance plans.

Additionally, ensure that the practice’s hours are compatible with your schedule and that you can secure appointments in a timely manner.
