What Are Pet Insurance Discounts?

Discounts can be a great way to save even more money when it comes to protecting your pet and sticking to a budget. You might find that pet insurance discounts across the market come in various forms, such as discounts for:

  • Military members
  • Multiple pets or multiple policies
  • Employer group benefits
  • Organization/membership programs or affinity groups
  • Bundling options (like bundling pet and auto insurance with the same provider)
  • Referral programs
  • Adopted or senior pets
  • Diminishing deductibles

Many providers and organizations offer discounts on pet insurance. With the average monthly cost of pet insurance in the U.S. for a dog coming in at $60 and $32 for a cat, it can be worth looking into.2

What Discounts Does MetLife Pet Insurance Offer?

MetLife Pet offers a wide array of discounts that can help lower premiums — or potentially your deductible.1,3 NerdWallet even named us the best pet insurance for discounts in 2025!4,5 Let’s take a look at all of the discounts that have helped us earn that designation.

Keep in mind that not all discounts may be available in every state, and you may need to provide proof of your eligibility.

Military, veteran, and first responder discount

For individuals who have served or are an active member of the Armed Forces or National Guard/Reservists, you, and your family, could qualify for a pet insurance military discount of 10%.6

If you’re a first responder, you could also be eligible for a 10% discount on your premium.6

Federal employee discount

For federal employees of the U.S. Government, you may be able to get discounted rates on your pet insurance plan. Eligible individuals can include United States Postal Service (USPS) employees, annuitants, and other federal civilian employees and their families.7

Healthcare worker discount

Do you work in the healthcare industry? In an effort to thank those who help to care for us and keep us healthy, healthcare workers may qualify for a 10% discount on premiums.6

Animal care discount

Of course, being in the pet insurance industry, we also want to show our appreciation for those who work with animals. If you’re an owner, staff member, or volunteer worker in the animal care industry, you could be eligible for a discount on your premium of 10%.8

Employer group discount

Sometimes, employers partner with other companies to offer certain benefits or services as part of their employee’s elected benefits packages. With MetLife Pet, you may be able to enroll in a policy through your employer and receive a 10% discount.9 Check with your employer to see if this is a benefit option for you!

Affinity group discount

MetLife Pet partners with various organizations to offer group discounts as a benefit to their members. These are known as affinity group discounts. You might be able to get a 5% discount on your pet insurance premium, and there may be certain requirements for enrollment in order to take advantage of this discount.10

Internet purchase discount

We strive to make purchasing your pet’s insurance policy online easy. When you do, you can receive a discount of $1 off your premium, every month, for your first policy year. Check out your coverage and customization options by getting a free quote. When you finish enrolling, the discount is automatically added to your policy.11

Multi-policy (multi-pet) discount

With our pet insurance, a multi-pet discount might be available when you enroll more than one pet, each with their own policy. You may also see us call this our multi-policy discount.12

We also have a different option for multiple pets that can help you save money on premiums — our unique Family Plan.13 With this plan, you can combine up to three pets on a single policy with a shared deductible, all while getting a discounted rate. Mixing ages and putting dogs and cats on the same policy is OK, and if you have more than three pets, they can be grouped together on additional Family Plans.13

Deductible discount

While all of the previous discounts help lower premiums, this discount can help lower your deductible — allowing you to start getting money back on covered costs quicker.

For every policy year you don’t receive a claim reimbursement, $50 will automatically be taken off of your deductible for the next policy year.3,14

Pet Insurance Discount FAQs

Can you combine discounts?

Yes, you can combine discounts with MetLife Pet Insurance! If you qualify for more than one discount, this can help you save even more money on premiums. However, combined discounts can’t exceed 30%.1

How do you find discounts?

Not everyone loves extreme couponing or scouring the web for discounts — that’s part of why we created this handy discount guide for you. To help you find discounts, start by asking your employer if they offer pet insurance as a benefit, then look to any affinity groups or membership organizations you’re part of.

Next, search for them directly online. Once you’ve decided on a provider to look into further, get a quote to see which discounts you may qualify for and what your premium may be. This can help ensure you get the coverage and discounts you want.

Are there alternatives to pet insurance that can still help you save?

If you’re unable to make pet insurance part of your financial plan, there may be other options you can look into to help you save on vet bills.

Ask your vet if they participate in a veterinary discount plan program. If they’re “in network,” you may be able to get discounts on veterinary services. This type of plan still requires you to enroll and pay a premium, but it’s more limiting since pet insurance can be used at any licensed vet.

Another option is signing up for a pet care credit card. However, not all vets accept this form of payment. These credit cards are specifically made for paying vet bills up front, so you can pay off the card’s balance over time and potentially save on interest (versus a regular credit card). You need to go through the approval process, and you’ll have a set credit limit.15
