The holiday season is here, and for some pet owners, that means traveling long distances with the whole furry family. Whether it is your animal's first trip or just one of many adventures, it's always important to keep them healthy and safe while traveling.

For cat and dog owners, this guide will teach you how to plan a safe journey with your pet.

Talk to your Vet First

Since your vet is the authority on health care for your animals, they can tell you whether your pet is healthy enough to travel. They will also recommend and vaccinations and provide you with any necessary paperwork.

Book Direct Flights

A direct flight means that your pet will spend less time being transferred between planes. And when they only have to be on one flight, this lowers the chances that they will be mishandled by airport staff. If your pet is small enough to go with you in the cabin, a direct flight will be less stressful for them.

Update their Identification

Dogs and cats should always be wearing tags with your phone number and address on it. If your pet will be traveling in a crate, place a sheet with your contact information in a protective pocket and place it on the crate. Also be sure to add any If your pet were to get lost, as this will ensure proper pet care.

Pack a Pet Travel Kit

Pack some food, treats, a water bowl, toys, and items from home in a travel kit for your pet. This may also include other pet health essentials like their medications and first aid items. This will help keep your pet cared for on the road.
Be courteous guests

If you are staying with loved ones during your travels remember to be considerate of how your pet might affect their home. This is especially true if they have pets. Be sure that your pet is well behaved enough to stay in someone else's house and that they get along with other animals.

There are many factors to consider when it comes to health care for your animals. By taking care of your pet while traveling, you can help them have a happy holiday as well.
