Why is my Pet Eating Grass?

You’ve most likely heard the claim that eating grass is a sign that your dog isn’t feeling well. While there may be some truth to the statement, it’s not a behavior that should cause too many worries.

If you have yourself a grass-eater, the good news is that many veterinarians consider eating grass normal behavior. Evidence actually suggests that most dogs eating grass feel well beforehand. And even if they do eat grass, they are not likely to vomit.

Although consuming grass does not signify a pet illness, it’s important to keep in mind that this behavior in combination with lethargy, diarrhea, and weight loss are all signs that something might not be right. In addition, excessive grass eating could also signify your pet might not be well. These symptoms could be due to gastrointestinal issues and you should seek guidance from your veterinarian.

Should you Stop Them?

You should always consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns. Grass is safe in moderation, but be cognizant of any areas that have recently been treated with chemicals. You should stop the grass-eating immediately if there are known pesticides and herbicides that could be harmful to your pet.
