Tips for Driving with Your Dog

Car rides and canine companions seem to be the perfect combination for many of us. Many dogs love a ride in the car more than just about anything and they make for wonderful company on a long road trip. But before you head out to your car with your dog in tow, here are some things that you might want to consider.

• Take them for a test drive. If this is your dog’s first time in the car, a good rule of thumb is to start small. Usually most dogs do fine with car travel, but like humans, some may suffer from motion sickness. Before you head out for a longer trip, it’s best to have a few trial runs under your belt so you and your pet know what to expect. If motion sickness becomes a major issue for your pet, talk with your vet and they can help.
• Buckle up for safety. We all hope to never encounter an accident while driving, but they do happen. One of best way to ensure your dog is safe while in the car is to make sure they are secured in a safety belt or harness. There are lots of options available, so it can be helpful to do some research to see which would be the best fit for your pup.   
• Make sure they have identification. In the unfortunate circumstance that there is an accident, dogs have been known to run away from the scene. In order to make sure that your pet can be helped, keep their collars on them with their proper identification.
• Make a mobile home. Some dogs become overwhelmed with all the stimulation that comes along with car rides and do better if they are confined to a crate or carrier. Not only does this provide safety for the pet, but also allows for the driver to focus on the road and not have to worry about your dog trying to climb into your lap.
• Keep it cool. Pets can easily become overheated, even when the weather is somewhat mild. When you take breaks, allow your pet to do the same. Ideally you should never leave your pet in the car alone, even with the windows cracked. Temperatures in the car can climb quickly and dogs can become distressed. It is actually illegal in some states to leave your dog in a parked vehicle, so be sure to keep your pet with you at all times.
